About the Cold Water Swimming Sessions
Our cold water swimming 7 week course is ideal for novices and experienced cold water swimmers. (You must be able to swim). Safety is our priority and there will be two qualified open water lifeguards (provided by The Wild Swimming Co) and two open water swimming coaches (Mini Manta Ray's Swim School instructors) provided for your safety.
Swim England Open Water Coach and Certified Cold Water Therapy Coach (and World Age Group Ice Swimming Silver Medallist and double Ice Mile Swimmer), Elizabeth Mills, will be on hand for coaching tips, encouragement and expert advice. STA Open Water Coach and Certified Cold Water Therapy Coach, and qualified pool lifeguard, Hayley, will also be there for on hand support and advice. One of our coaches will be in the water to encourage swimmers, especially if it's your first time in cold water/ in a lake/ swimming in the dark.
Your swim will be magical in the dark, swimming under the light of the moon and stars, under the glow of Corfe Castle. There will be lighting to illuminate the lake entry/exit at the pontoon. You will need to bring your own tow float with lights inside, and we recommend wearing adventure lights on your swim hat/ and or costume for additional lighting. You can swim in skins (no wetsuit) or wetsuit, and with or without boots and gloves. It's up to you! We highly recommend swimming/ dipping in skins to get the full cold water therapy experience.
Cold water swimming is great for boosting your mood and immune system, improving your fitness levels, metabolism and circulation, and it can reduce stress levels. It's also a great chance to meet friendly fellow swimmers!
The hour session allows you to swim for as little or as long, as you want to, and you can go between lake and sauna. The swimming loop is 160m. You are welcome to swim or dip, or do both! We ask that everyone swims their own swim and listens to their body. Just a few minutes in cold water gives you great benefits! The water temperature will vary from starting at around 16 to 20 degrees (estimate) in November to possibly dipping to around 5 to 9 degrees in December. Cold water is officially at 15 degrees Celcius or below, but physical and mental health benefits start whenever you show up and embrace the cold (whatever the temperature), in our friendly cold water community!
All abilities are welcome, from first time cold water dippers/swimmers to experienced ice swimmers. Free hot chocolate and biscuits are included, and there are changing room and toilet facilities. This course is great for cold water therapy, swimmers training for cold water events and ice miles, and for recreational swimming and dipping.
